After losing in the WTA500 semifinal in Mérida, Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan entered the world's top 40 rankings for the first time in her career.
Following the tournament, the 22-year-old Armenian shared a message on her social media:
"My first WTA500 semifinal. I couldn’t give 100% due to injury, but I fought until the end.
I’ve reached my highest career ranking and am proud to be the first Armenian in the WTA Top 40—this achievement means so much to me. I’m grateful for this journey and motivated for what lies ahead," wrote Elina Avanesyan after her semifinal loss in Mérida.
On March 5, Elina will begin her campaign at the Indian Wells tournament, facing Lauren Davis in the round of 1/64. Avanesyan previously defeated Davis in her first match under the Armenian flag at the Cincinnati Open in August 2024.
That match ended in Avanesyan's victory with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
