Australian fighter Jack Della Maddalena (18-2) became the new UFC welterweight champion after defeating reigning titleholder Belal Muhammad (24-4) by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 315, which took place on May 11 in Montreal, Canada.
The fight went the full five rounds, with all three judges scoring it 48-47 in favor of Maddalena. This marks the biggest victory in the Australian’s career and earned him the coveted championship belt.
Belal Muhammad’s loss could shake up both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. His close friend and current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is expected to move up to welterweight to face Maddalena, while the lightweight title may be contested between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira.
