Armenian wrestler Janes Nazaryan (65 kg) has advanced to the semifinals of the U17 World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling, which kicked off today in Athens, Greece.
In the quarterfinals, Nazaryan confidently defeated European bronze medalist Kilian Eddou (France) with a score of 6:0. Before that, he overcame Azerbaijan's Huseyn Isgandarov (9:1) and the USA's Arseniy Kikinov (4:1).
In the semifinals, the Armenian will face Ukraine’s Yehor Tarasenko. In the other semifinal, India’s Anuj will meet Georgia’s Erekle Tavberidze. If Nazaryan and Tavberidze both reach the final, it will be a rematch of the U17 European Championship final, where the Georgian claimed a 9:0 victory.
On the first day of the tournament, four other Armenian wrestlers competed, but none managed to reach the semifinals. However, Martin Manjikian (48 kg) and Khachik Khachikyan (110 kg) still have chances to fight for bronze through the repechage rounds, provided their opponents from the main bracket advance to the final. Hayk Mehriyan (80 kg) and Meruzhan Mkhitaryan (55 kg) have been eliminated from the medal contention.
