Hungarian club Győr, a potential opponent of Yerevan’s Pyunik in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round, has strengthened its squad with a powerful addition — 20-year-old Ukrainian striker Oleksandr Pishchur has signed with the team. Standing at an impressive 204 cm, he is among the tallest professional footballers in Europe.
The young forward joined Győr from a Hungarian second-tier club, where he scored 9 goals and provided 3 assists last season. Considering his height and age, these are promising numbers — Pishchur is still learning how to fully utilize his physical attributes.
Pishchur’s transfer coincided with the departure of the team’s main striker, Nadir Benbouali, so the Ukrainian may get a chance to prove himself in upcoming European matches. A potential showdown with Pyunik's defenders could be especially intriguing if the Armenian team advances from the first round. For comparison, Pyunik’s central defenders range in height from 177 to 185 cm — 20 to 30 cm shorter than the Ukrainian giant.
Heights of Pyunik’s defenders:
Filipe Almeida — 185 cm
Serhiy Vakulenko — 183 cm
Aleksandar Milkovic — 181 cm
Mykhailo Kovalenko — 181 cm
Juninho — 177 cm
Fun fact: Oleksandr is the namesake and son of former footballer Oleksandr Pishchur, who played for Uzbekistan’s Bunyodkor. The elder Pishchur was also a striker and quite tall himself — 197 cm.
Reminder: In the first qualifying round of the Conference League, Pyunik will face Tre Fiori from San Marino. The matches are scheduled for July 10 and 17. If victorious, the Armenian team will meet Győr.
