Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has praised the current form and activity of one of the leading fighters in the lightweight division, Arman Tsarukyan.
According to Cormier, Tsarukyan looks especially impressive in grappling right now and can be considered the strongest fighter in the division.
“When it comes to grappling, Arman Tsarukyan is incredibly active right now. Honestly, this guy might be the best lightweight in the world. Islam is gone — and Arman really looks like the top guy: big, strong, physically powerful,” Cormier said in an interview with the YouTube channel Red Corner MMA.
The former champion also noted that the UFC has a great opportunity to organize a blockbuster fight between Arman Tsarukyan and reigning champion Ilia Topuria.
“Champion Ilia Topuria is phenomenal. I believe Ilia and Arman are the two best lightweights in the world right now. And they absolutely need to fight,” Cormier emphasized.
He added that despite the popularity and level of fighters such as Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje, the Tsarukyan vs. Topuria matchup has special potential.
“Yes, Paddy Pimblett is great. Yes, Justin Gaethje is great. But Arman and Ilia have something more — in terms of skills and story. This can be made into a huge fight,” Cormier concluded.
Previously, Tsarukyan has repeatedly stated that he is ready to face any top contender in the division, and Daniel Cormier’s words have only fueled fans’ interest in a potential title clash.
