U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships 2026: Armenian Wrestlers’ Draw and Schedule

The draw for the Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the U20 World Championships took place in Bratislava on August 15. The World Wrestling Championships will be held in the Slovak capital from August 16 to 23, while the Greco-Roman competition will run from August 16 to 19.

On the opening day, August 16, wrestlers in the 63, 77, 87 and 130 kg weight categories will take to the mat. Alex Margaryan, Samvel Terteryan, Yurik Petrosyan and Seyran Kirakosyan will be the first members of the Armenian team to begin their medal campaigns.

Emin Javadli is the 2026 U20 European champion.

60 kg

Round of 16: Marat Achemyan — winner of Dostonbek Oripov (Uzbekistan) / Ilya Panyutin (Russia).

Ilya Panyutin is the 2026 U20 European champion.

63 kg

Round of 32: Alex Margaryan — Ionut Mereuta (Romania).

Margaryan will be one of the first Armenian representatives to take to the mat on August 16.

67 kg

Round of 32: Yurik Mkhitaryan — Maksim Damaschin (Moldova).

72 kg

Round of 32: Gor Khachatryan — Mingiyan Goryaev (Russia).

Mingiyan Goryaev is the 2025 U20 European champion.

77 kg

Reigning U20 European champion Samvel Terteryan will begin the tournament in the Round of 32.

Competition in this weight category begins on August 16.

82 kg

Round of 16: Vahe Hovhannisyan — winner of Rakhman (Kazakhstan) / Prince Prince (India).

Prince is a bronze medalist at the 2026 senior Asian Championships.

87 kg

Round of 16: Yurik Petrosyan — winner of Xiangle Wang (China) / Mirsaid Yunusov (Kyrgyzstan).

Competition in the 87 kg category begins on August 16.

97 kg

Round of 32: Erik Ter-Matevosyan — Dorian Trejo (Mexico).

130 kg

Round of 16: Seyran Kirakosyan — winner of Cemal Bakir (Türkiye) / Ali Ilyasov (Russia).

Ali Ilyasov is the 2025 U20 world champion and 2026 U20 European champion. Cemal Bakir is a two-time U17 world champion.

Qualification bouts in the 130 kg category will take place on August 16.

At the 2026 U20 European Championships, Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestlers finished second in the team standings and won four medals — one gold, two silver and one bronze.

Samvel Terteryan became European champion, Edgar Petrosyan and Alex Margaryan won silver medals, while Yurik Petrosyan claimed bronze.

At the same time, the World Championships draw can be described as a difficult one for the Armenian team. Already in the early rounds of the brackets, the Armenian wrestlers could potentially face four U20 European champions, as well as a medalist from the senior Asian Championships.

At the 2025 U20 World Championships, Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestlers won four medals:

Gold — Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg)
Silver — Yurik Mkhitaryan (60 kg)
Silver — Alex Margaryan (63 kg)
Bronze — Erik Ter-Matevosyan (87 kg)

Mkhitaryan, Margaryan and Ter-Matevosyan will also compete this year.
