Today, on September 18, the World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling kick off in Zagreb. On the first day, athletes from four weight categories — 55, 77, 82, and 130 kg — will enter the mat.
The Armenian national team will be represented by four wrestlers:
-
Manvel Khachatryan (55 kg)
-
Malkhas Amoyan (77 kg)
-
Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg)
-
Razmik Kurdyan (130 kg)
The draw turned out to be tough for the Armenian athletes — already in the opening bouts they will face strong opponents.
23-year-old Razmik Kurdyan will make his debut at the senior World Championships. In his first match, he will face experienced Beka Kandelaki from Azerbaijan.
22-year-old Manvel Khachatryan will begin the tournament against Turkey’s Muhammet Cakır. His opponent has less experience at the senior level but has won medals at youth championships.
Malkhas Amoyan (77 kg) is considered one of the tournament favorites. His first-round opponent will be Kamal Bey of the USA. Despite Amoyan’s status, opening bouts against strong rivals are never easy. Possible “Armenian derbies” may follow: in the next round Amoyan could face Arman Karapetyan from Belarus, and in the quarterfinals — Tigran Galustyan, representing France.
24-year-old Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg), who has already competed at the European Championships, will debut at the senior World Championships. In the opening round, he will face Russia’s Adlet Tyulyubaev, bronze medalist of the 2024 Europeans, who previously competed at 77 kg.
First-round pairings of Armenian wrestlers:
-
55 kg (1/8 finals): Manvel Khachatryan — Muhammet Cakır (Turkey)
-
77 kg (1/16 finals): Malkhas Amoyan — Kamal Bey (USA)
-
82 kg (1/16 finals): Samvel Grigoryan — Adlet Tyulyubaev (Russia)
-
130 kg (1/16 finals): Razmik Kurdyan — Beka Kandelaki (Azerbaijan)
