Fourth day of the 2025 Weightlifting World Championships: 6 world records and Armenia’s first medal

Fourth day of the 2025 Weightlifting World Championships: 6 world records and Armenia’s first medal
Weightlifting

On October 5, in the Norwegian city of Førde, the fourth competition day of the 2025 Weightlifting World Championships took place. Medals were contested in two weight categories — 71 kg for men and 63 kg for women.

Among women, North Korea once again claimed victory. The DPRK now has 4 gold medals and 6 new world records at the 2025 World Championships. North Korean lifters have won all of the first four women’s weight categories. Today, Ri Suk (63 kg) took the gold, setting three world records — in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total — with 253 kg (111 + 142). Among men, a North Korean athlete also competed but finished without a medal.

In the men’s 71 kg category, three world records were set. The winner was Olympic silver medalist from Paris, Weeraphon Wichuma (Thailand), who set world records in the clean & jerk and total. The battle for medals was incredibly tight — the top three lifters were separated by just one kilogram, while the fourth and fifth places were also close to the podium.

Armenian weightlifter Gor Sahakyan (71 kg) failed to register a result in the clean & jerk, missing all three attempts at 182 kg. As a result, he finished without a total but won a small silver medal in the snatch — the first medal for Armenia at the 2025 World Championships, albeit a minor one.
