Belgium and Egypt played out a draw in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage. The Group G clash in Seattle ended 1-1.
Egypt took the lead as early as the 19th minute. Emam Ashour found space to shoot and sent the ball into the Belgian net, giving his team a strong start to the tournament.
Belgium struggled for a long time to find a way through and had a particularly difficult first half. After the break, the team improved, and the key moment came with the introduction of Romelu Lukaku. The striker came on in the 66th minute and, just seconds later, was involved in the attacking move that ended with an own goal by Egypt.
After that, Belgium tried to push for a winner, but Egypt held on for the draw and earned an important point in their opening World Cup match.
Group G also includes Iran and New Zealand. Their match will be played later.
