Balša Popović: “I think we are better than Armenia — we are going there to win”

Montenegro goalkeeper Balša Popović, a club teammate of Nair Tiknizyan, has said ahead of the trip to Yerevan that his team intends to beat Armenia.

“We have a difficult match ahead of us in Yerevan, there is no doubt about that. But I think we have more quality and are the better team. We are going to Yerevan to win,” the Olympiacos goalkeeper said (vijesti.me).

Montenegro will travel to Yerevan on September 27. Local media note that the team expended considerable energy in its hard-fought 2–1 win over Cyprus, so Mirko Vučinić may need to rotate his squad. No new confirmed absences have been announced since the opening round.

Montenegro have played in Armenia twice before and lost on both occasions. In a 2016 World Cup qualifier, Montenegro led 2–0 before Armenia came back to win 3–2. Armenia also won a 2022 friendly 1–0.

Armenia and Montenegro won their opening matches and have three points each. They will meet on September 28 at 20:00 Yerevan time in a direct contest for the lead in Group C2.
