Artur Aleksanyan Undergoes Spinal Surgery: Olympic Champion Plans Return to Wrestling

Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, four-time world champion and seven-time European champion Artur Aleksanyan has undergone spinal surgery. The Wrestling Federation of Armenia announced the news on October 17.

The 34-year-old decorated wrestler is currently undergoing postoperative rehabilitation. Despite his health problems, Aleksanyan has no intention of retiring from professional wrestling and plans to resume full training once he has recovered.

The Wrestling Federation of Armenia expressed its support for the athlete, widely known by his nickname "The White Bear," and wished him a speedy return to the wrestling mat.

"We wish the White Bear good health and a speedy recovery. The wrestling mat is waiting for you, Artur!" the federation said in its statement.

Aleksanyan has been struggling with back problems for some time. The injury forced him to miss the 2026 European Championships, and it was previously announced that the Armenian wrestler would also be unable to compete at the upcoming World Championships, scheduled to take place from October 24 to November 1 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Armen Babalaryan, head coach of Armenia's national Greco-Roman wrestling team, had previously indicated that Aleksanyan's health problems might require surgery. The athlete must now complete his rehabilitation before returning to competitive wrestling.

At the World Championships in Astana, Hayk Khloyan, a U23 world champion, will represent Armenia in the 97 kg weight category instead of Aleksanyan.

Artur Aleksanyan remains one of the most decorated athletes in the history of independent Armenia. He won Olympic gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and has also claimed Olympic silver and bronze medals.

No official date has yet been announced for Aleksanyan's return to competition.
