On June 25, in the Italian city of Caorle, the semifinal matches of the U15 European Freestyle Wrestling Championships took place. The Armenian national team delivered an outstanding performance: three wrestlers advanced to the finals, and in the 57 kg weight category, a historic all-Armenian final is expected.
In the 57 kg semifinals, Erik Papikyan confidently defeated Azerbaijani Eljan Hasanov with a score of 7:0. On the neighboring mat, his compatriot Tigran Kolotyan overcame another Azerbaijani, Murad Guseynov, by the criteria after a tied score of 5:5. Thus, the championship title in this weight class will be contested by two Armenian athletes: Erik Papikyan and Tigran Kolotyan.
In the 75 kg category, Artur Mkrtchyan advanced to the final with a dominant 14:1 victory over Georgian Giorgi Gogiberidze. In the gold medal match, he will face Amal Unarokov from Russia.
The finals will take place on June 26.
Additionally, Aren Mirzoyan (52 kg) and Hamlet Antonyan (62 kg) will fight for bronze medals, along with several other Armenian wrestlers who advanced to the repechage rounds: Aren Piruzyan and Narek Dallakyan (both 44 kg, who will face each other), Shagen Martirosyan (68 kg), and Meruzhan Kocharyan (85 kg).
As a result, Armenia is guaranteed at least three medals in the tournament — including one gold — and potentially five more bronze medals.
Everything will be decided tomorrow.
