The Armenian national para powerlifting team achieved outstanding success at the World Championship, winning 8 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze medal, as well as setting several world and European records. This was announced at a press conference in the “Armenpress” media center by Hakob Abrahamyan, President of the Armenian Paralympic Committee, and the team’s head coach and committee’s secretary general, Gevorg Hovhannisyan.
According to Hakob Abrahamyan, the team’s performance was a historic achievement:
“Our athletes delivered truly exceptional results. In the team standings, Armenia ranked third in the world — a brilliant accomplishment,” he noted.
Abrahamyan also emphasized the need for greater state and sponsor funding to support and develop the success of Paralympic sports in the country:
“If there are sufficient financial resources, we will be able to attract more young athletes and expand our team,” he added.
Head coach Gevorg Hovhannisyan spoke about the outstanding performances of Armenian athletes in different age categories (15–17 and 18–20 years old).
Rafael Amazaspian set both world and European records, Karine Manukyan also established a record in her category, and Artyom Movsisyan from Gavar won two gold medals.
In the 59 kg weight category, Armenia was represented by two athletes — Artur Babayan and Khoren Tsaturyan. Both achieved record-breaking results, finishing first and second, respectively. Among the medalists were also debutants Tigran Khlekhtyan and David Unanyan, while Anyuta Petrosyan claimed a gold medal.
Hovhannisyan noted that participation in the World Championship holds special significance, as the tournament results affect qualification for the Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Thus, the Armenian team not only reaffirmed its status as one of the strongest in the world but also laid a solid foundation for future Olympic success.
