Armenian footballers kick off the new season in Germany’s Regionalliga

Armenian footballers kick off the new season in Germany’s Regionalliga Mike Gevorgyan

The new season of Germany’s Regionalliga — the country’s fourth-tier league — has begun, and once again Armenian names are in the spotlight. For some, this level becomes a springboard to professional football; for others, it’s a tough test of strength. The league has seen future Armenian national team stars such as Sargis Adamyan, Aleksandr Karapetyan, and Grant-Leon Ranos, while some players have remained in the shadows.

The Regionalliga serves as a transitional stage between youth and professional football. For many young players, it is their first serious test against experienced opponents before getting a chance to move to stronger teams.

In the 2025/26 season, the Armenian presence in the Regionalliga is represented by three young and ambitious players: twin brothers Mark and Mike Gevorgyan, and the returning-from-injury Yerjanik Gubasaryan. And, of course, we must not forget Dawud Tuma — an experienced player of Armenian descent who has long established himself at this level.

How they started the season

Mark Gevorgyan (20, Hannover II, Regionalliga North)
Mark started the season confidently: in the first round, he was in the starting lineup at right back against Hamburg II (draw), and in the second round, he came on as a substitute to cover the left-back position, helping his team beat Schöningen 3-0.

Mike Gevorgyan (20, Unterhaching, Regionalliga Bavaria)
Unterhaching won all three opening matches and leads the standings. Last season, the team played in the 3. Liga and aims to return there. Mike started all three matches, playing the full 90 minutes each time. In the last match, he provided an assist. Last season, he made his 3. Liga debut for 1860 Munich but mostly played for the reserve team in the Oberliga.

Erjanik Ghubasaryan (24, Weiche Flensburg 08, Regionalliga North)
After returning to football last season and playing in the fifth division, Yerjanik stepped up a level this summer. This season, he has made two substitute appearances, with his team winning two of their three matches. His brother Andranik continues to play in the fifth division. Both have represented Armenia at youth levels, and Erjanik has one senior national team cap.

Davud Tuma (29, Wiedenbrück, Regionalliga West)
Although Davud is no longer considered for the Armenian national team, his story is worth telling. He is an Armenian whose family fled from Turkey. Until 2016, he used the Turkish surname Gügör, but upon reaching adulthood, he exercised his right to change it and restored his ancestors’ historical surname, which they had before the Armenian Genocide. This is Tuma’s third season with Wiedenbrück. In the first three matches of the current season, he made two substitute appearances and played one full match. The team started the season with one win.
