Armenia wins 9 medals at the 2026 European Sambo Championships

The 2026 European Sambo Championships concluded in Tbilisi on May 17. Team Armenia had one of its most successful tournaments in recent years and finished third in the overall medal standings.
Armenian sambists won 9 medals: 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze. In the overall standings, Armenia finished behind only Russia and Ukraine, ahead of Belarus, Georgia, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan.
The main victories for the Armenian team came in sport sambo. Karen Sargsyan became European champion in the 58 kg weight category, while Gor Harutyunyan won gold in the 88 kg division. Both athletes produced confident performances throughout the tournament and brought Armenia two gold medals.
Three more Armenian sambists reached the finals in combat sambo and became silver medalists. Mayis Nersesyan won silver in the 64 kg category, Arsen Avedisyan in the 71 kg division, and Leonid Melikyan in the 98 kg weight category.
Armenia’s bronze medals were won by Boris Shatveryan in sport sambo, as well as Narek Goginyan, Gevorg Azatyan and Mkhitar Temuryan in combat sambo.
