On August 7, the 12th World Games kicked off in Chengdu, China — an international tournament in non-Olympic sports, often referred to as the analogue of the Olympic Games.
Team Armenia is represented in two disciplines: Muay Thai and combat sambo. The country’s sole Muay Thai participant, Narek Khachikyan, has already fought his bout but lost to his opponent in the opening match.
Fans’ main hopes are now focused on the combat sambo tournament, which will start on August 12. Representing Armenia will be:
Women — Arpine Mnatsakanyan (54 kg), Srbui Ovakisyan (59 kg).
Men — Mayis Nersesyan (64 kg), Sargis Vardanyan (79 kg), Arman Avanesyan (98 kg).
Each Armenian athlete in combat sambo is aiming for the tournament’s gold medal.
The World Games are held every four years, bringing together the planet’s best athletes in disciplines that are not part of the Olympic Games program.
