Two Armenian Wrestlers Reach U20 World Championship Finals: Terteryan and Petrosyan to Fight for Gold

The Armenian national team enjoyed a successful opening day at the U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Bratislava. Following the preliminary rounds and semifinals, two Armenian representatives — Samvel Terteryan (77 kg) and Yurik Petrosyan (87 kg) — advanced to the finals and will compete for gold medals at the world championships.

Another Armenian wrestler, Seyran Kirakosyan (130 kg), remains in contention for a bronze medal and will continue in the repechage. Alex Margaryan (63 kg) saw his medal campaign come to an end at the quarterfinal stage.

Samvel Terteryan reaches U20 World final without conceding a single point

One of the standout performers on the opening day of the World Championships was reigning U20 European champion Samvel Terteryan, competing in the 77 kg weight category.

The Armenian wrestler has been in impressive form: Terteryan has won all four of his bouts at the U20 World Championships without conceding a single point to his opponents.

In the Round of 32, Terteryan defeated Egypt’s Mohammed Ibrahim 8-0. He then recorded a convincing 6-0 victory over American wrestler Leister Bowling before beating Hungary’s Zalan Toplak 5-0 in the quarterfinal.

In the semifinal, Terteryan faced Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili. Samvel once again controlled the bout from start to finish and secured a comfortable 6-0 victory to book his place in the World Championship final.

Terteryan therefore continues a remarkable run: he has so far not conceded a single technical point at either the U20 European Championships or the U20 World Championships.

Terteryan to face Javidan Nakhmatov in the final

In the decisive 77 kg bout, Samvel Terteryan will face Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nakhmatov.

The two wrestlers already know each other well. Terteryan and Nakhmatov previously met in the U20 European Championship final, where the Armenian wrestler claimed a 4-0 victory to win the gold medal.

Terteryan will now look to repeat that success on the world stage and add the U20 world title to his European crown.

Yurik Petrosyan confidently advances to the 87 kg final

Armenia’s second place in the finals was secured by Yurik Petrosyan, who competes in the 87 kg weight category.

Petrosyan opened his World Championship campaign with a convincing 8-0 victory over Mirsaid Yunusov of Kyrgyzstan.

In the quarterfinal, the Armenian wrestler faced Iran’s Amirhossein Nematzadeh. Petrosyan won the bout 5-1 to advance to the semifinal.

Standing between him and a place in the final was Austria’s Paul Mayer. Petrosyan once again produced an impressive performance and earned a dominant 8-1 victory.

In the U20 World Championship final, Yurik Petrosyan will face Japanese wrestler Taizo Yoshida, who has already won the senior Asian Championships and has also medaled at the senior World Championships. Petrosyan therefore faces a major challenge in the gold-medal bout.

As a result, on the second day of competition, Armenia will be represented in two finals at the U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships.

Seyran Kirakosyan to fight for a chance to reach the bronze-medal bout

In the 130 kg super-heavyweight category, Seyran Kirakosyan lost 0-9 to Ali Ilyasov in the Round of 16.

However, the Armenian wrestler’s World Championship campaign is not yet over. Ilyasov managed to reach the tournament final, allowing Kirakosyan to continue competing through the repechage.

The Armenian representative will now look to take advantage of his second chance and reach the bronze-medal bout.

Alex Margaryan ends his campaign in the 63 kg category

In the 63 kg weight category, Alex Margaryan successfully progressed through the opening two rounds of the World Championships.

In the Round of 32, the Armenian representative defeated Romania’s Ionit Mereuta 10-4. He then edged Hungary’s Levente Fige 2-1 in a closely contested Round of 16 bout.

In the quarterfinal, Margaryan faced Iran’s Ali Gharibi and lost 4-12. Following subsequent results in the bracket, the Armenian wrestler lost his opportunity to continue fighting for a medal.

Armenia has two finalists at the U20 World Championships

Following the opening day of competition, the Armenian national team has two finalists at the U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships. Samvel Terteryan will fight for gold in the 77 kg category, while Yurik Petrosyan will compete for the title at 87 kg.

In addition, Seyran Kirakosyan remains in contention for a chance to win a bronze medal in the 130 kg category.

Four more Armenian wrestlers will begin their campaigns tomorrow: Edgar Petrosyan (55 kg), Yurik Mkhitaryan (67 kg), Gor Khachatryan (72 kg), and Erik Ter-Matevosyan (97 kg).
