In an interview with ESPN, Arman Tsarukyan revealed behind-the-scenes details about the UFC’s decision to book Paddy Pimblett against Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title. According to the Armenian contender, the promotion deliberately prioritized building Pimblett’s star power while sidelining him — despite Tsarukyan being closer to a title shot than anyone else.

“I Didn’t Believe They’d Give Pimblett an Interim Belt”

Tsarukyan admitted that rumors of a January fight between Pimblett and Ilia Topuria had been circulating long before the official announcement, but the news about the interim title stunned him.

“I found out about Pimblett vs. Gaethje a couple of days before the announcement. I couldn’t believe it. But they told me: ‘It’s business. Deal with it.’ Fine — I’ll fight for the belt later.”

The lightweight added that he remains in camp and is confident that Pimblett, Gaethje, and Topuria are “easy work” compared to Islam Makhachev, who has already moved divisions.

“The UFC Is Turning Pimblett Into Their New Star”

In Tsarukyan’s view, the cancellation of the January Topuria–Pimblett fight was no coincidence. He believes the UFC is deliberately engineering a path for the British fighter.

“They want to make Pimblett a star — give him easy fights, give him a belt, and then set up a fight with Topuria like Khabib vs. Conor.”

Still, Tsarukyan hopes Gaethje “kicks Paddy’s ass” to put an end to what he calls overblown hype.

Ready to Step In — But Only for Big Money

Tsarukyan ruled out being a designated backup fighter for Gaethje–Pimblett, but said he’s willing to accept a short-notice opportunity if the pay matches the risk.

“Two or three weeks? No problem — if the money is big. I’m always in shape.”

“I Want a BMF Title Fight with Holloway”

Arman insisted the most logical move is to book him against Max Holloway for the BMF title. A rematch with Charles Oliveira, he said, makes no sense.

“Why give Oliveira tough fights? The UFC needs to protect a legend.”

Speaking about a potential fight with Pimblett, Tsarukyan didn’t hold back.

“I would smash his face with elbows. Leave a lot of marks on him. And if I see Pimblett in person, I’ll give him a real Armenian slap.”

Tsarukyan also noted he didn’t attend the Pimblett–Gaethje fight only because “I might end up fighting someone there.”

Prediction for Gaethje vs. Pimblett

Tsarukyan believes Gaethje should be considered the clear favorite.

“If Justin doesn’t drink and party, he’ll outstrike Pimblett easily. I hope he can defend the wrestling and win a decision.”

Arman even offered to help Gaethje prepare: “If you need help for this guy — I’ll fly out.”
