An important moment for Armenian wrestling took place at the 2026 European U17 Wrestling Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria. Ariana Martirosyan competed for the Armenian national team in women’s wrestling.
The Armenian athlete wrestled in the 46 kg weight category. Unfortunately, her debut was short: Martirosyan lost by technical superiority in her opening bout and ended her campaign at the tournament.
However, the very fact that an Armenian girl competed at this level deserves special attention. For Armenian wrestling, this is an important step toward developing the women’s discipline, which for many years had effectively lacked stable representation at United World Wrestling tournaments.
Since Sportaran began closely following Armenian sports, this is the first appearance by an Armenian representative in women’s wrestling at UWW tournaments. Even despite the defeat, Ariana Martirosyan’s participation can be seen as a promising beginning and a sign that Armenia may develop a new direction in wrestling.
At the same time, women’s wrestling is not an entirely new chapter for Armenia. In the past, the country was represented internationally by Karine Shadoyan, an Armenian from Russia who competed for Armenia and won a bronze medal at the 2006 European Championship. According to UWW, Shadoyan is listed as Armenia’s representative in women’s wrestling, and her bronze at Euro 2006 remains a historic achievement for Armenian sport.
Now Ariana Martirosyan’s appearance at youth level may become the first step toward Armenia’s return to women’s wrestling on a more systematic basis. This direction will need time, support and the involvement of new athletes, but the beginning has already been made.
