Álvaro Arbeloa has officially been appointed head coach of Real Madrid. The club’s management announced the appointment of the 42-year-old specialist following the departure of Xabi Alonso, whose tenure in the Spanish capital lasted less than a year.
The former right-back of Los Blancos is well known to both the fans and the club’s internal structure. As a player, Arbeloa spent 12 seasons at Real Madrid, made 238 appearances, and won eight trophies, including two Champions League titles. After retiring, he remained within the club system, working in recent years with youth teams as well as Real Madrid Castilla. His promotion to the first team marks his first independent experience at the highest level of senior football.
Xabi Alonso’s dismissal was driven not only by sporting results but also by a tense atmosphere inside the squad. The conflict reached its peak during the Spanish Super Cup following a defeat to Barcelona. According to Spanish media, Alonso asked the team to form a “guard of honour” for the opponents, but Kylian Mbappé demonstratively led the players off the pitch. The squad followed the French forward, ignoring the head coach’s instruction, which dealt a serious blow to Alonso’s authority.
Journalist Pepe Álvarez claims that problems began in the very first weeks of the Basque coach’s tenure. Alonso allegedly felt a lack of respect from the dressing-room leaders and eventually decided to step down, exhausted by pressure and “star egos.” Despite finishing second in the league and continuing their Champions League campaign, the club’s management deemed the situation a dead end.
Real Madrid is now placing its trust in a man who embodies the club’s identity and discipline. Arbeloa is tasked with stabilising the team until the end of the season and restoring order in the dressing room. It remains unclear whether he is viewed as an interim solution or a long-term option for next season — much will depend on results and the players’ response to the new coach.
Arbeloa will sign a contract with Real Madrid until June 2027. He will not be an interim coach.
