The future of one of the world's most promising super heavyweight wrestlers, Iranian Amirreza Masoumi, appears to be taking shape. After talks in Yerevan and rumors about a possible switch to the Armenian national team, the 20-year-old athlete has surfaced in Baku — and all signs point to Azerbaijan becoming his new sporting home.
Masoumi’s personal page featured photos taken first in Yerevan and later in Baku. A new image has since surfaced online showing the Asian champion training with the Azerbaijani national team. This is the first direct evidence that negotiations with the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation have advanced significantly.

Another important clue came in the form of farewell words from the Iranian team doctor, who wished Masoumi good luck in his new country. This suggests that the decision to change sporting citizenship has effectively been made, with only official formalities remaining.
Thus, it seems that Azerbaijan has won the race for the young super heavyweight star. It’s worth noting that Armenia was also considered one of the main contenders, with Masoumi having held talks with the local federation.
Still, we await official confirmation. It’s entirely possible Masoumi simply visited a training session.
