Alina Charaeva beats Elina Avanesyan in Armenian derby in Brazil

Armenia’s Alina Charaeva continues her successful run at the WTA 250 tournament in São Paulo. In the second round, the 24-year-old defeated another Armenian representative, Elina Avanesyan.

Charaeva, ranked No. 133 in the WTA rankings, secured a convincing straight-sets victory — 6-2, 6-3.

Alina dominated the opening set, dropping only two games. After the first set, Avanesyan, who is ranked No. 155 in the world, took a medical timeout due to a shoulder problem.

Despite the injury, Elina continued the match but was unable to turn it around. Charaeva maintained her advantage and closed out the second set 6-3.

Charaeva defeats Avanesyan again

This was not the first meeting between the two Armenian players. Charaeva and Avanesyan had previously played an exhibition match in Yerevan.

They had also faced each other in an official tournament in March 2026. At the time, Charaeva was still representing Russia. That match also ended with her winning in straight sets.

As a result, Alina has now won both of her official matches against Avanesyan without dropping a set.

Next opponent to be decided later

With this victory, Charaeva advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in São Paulo.

For a place in the semifinals, the Armenian representative will face the winner of the match between Anna Blinkova and Amelie Valdamanova.

Blinkova is ranked No. 94 in the WTA rankings and is the fourth seed at the São Paulo tournament. The player recently switched her sporting nationality from Russian to French.
