At the ongoing European Weightlifting Championships in Chișinău, 19-year-old Armenian athlete Aleksandra Grigoryan won a silver medal in the women’s 55 kg weight category. She placed sixth in the snatch but made up for it by winning the small gold in the clean & jerk and finishing second overall with a total of 202 kg (85+117).
The fight for gold went down to the final attempt. To surpass France’s Garance Rigault and climb to the top of the podium, Grigoryan needed to lift 121 kg in the clean & jerk — which would have been a new European record. However, Aleksandra failed twice at that weight and ultimately secured second place, missing out on gold by just three kilograms.
Another Armenian athlete in this category, Izabella Yaylyan, finished in 6th place with a total of 193 kg.
Results of the women’s 55 kg weight class:
-
Garance Rigault (France) — 205 kg (92+113)
-
Aleksandra Grigoryan (Armenia) — 202 kg (85+117)
-
Olha Ivzhenko (Ukraine) — 201 kg (92+108)
This marks Grigoryan’s second consecutive medal at the European Championships. In 2024, she won gold and was named the best young weightlifter of the year.
