Team Armenia has won its first medal at the 2025 IWF World Junior Weightlifting Championships, taking place in Lima, the capital of Peru. The bronze medal in the women’s 55 kg weight class was secured by Aleksandra Grigoryan.
The 19-year-old Armenian weightlifter placed fifth in the snatch, but excelled in the clean & jerk, lifting 116 kg and winning a small gold medal in that discipline. Grigoryan is the current junior world record holder in the clean & jerk — last year she lifted 120 kg, but due to back problems, she couldn’t replicate that result at this year’s event.
Nonetheless, despite the physical difficulties, Aleksandra showed determination and character. On her third attempt, she successfully lifted the declared weight and, with a total of 204 kg (88 kg in snatch and 116 kg in clean & jerk), claimed third place and earned the bronze medal.
Results, Women’s 55 kg:
Wei Tingna (China) — 209 kg (94+115)
Celine Delia (Italy) — 205 kg (91+114)
Aleksandra Grigoryan (Armenia) — 204 kg (88+116)
Just three weeks ago, Aleksandra Grigoryan took part in the adult European Championship, where she took second place with a result of 201 kg. Then, by the way, she beat the Italian Celine Delia, who today lifted 1 kilogram more.
On May 2, another Armenian weightlifter, Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, also competed in Peru and took 10th place in the 67 kg weight category among men.
