According to RIA Novosti, Sochi midfielder Alexander Kovalenko may obtain Armenian sports citizenship. The 22-year-old footballer is in talks with the Football Federation of Armenia about the possibility of representing the national team.
This season, Kovalenko has played 10 matches in the Russian Premier League and 4 games in the Russian Cup. The midfielder has Armenian roots: his mother is Armenian, and his father is half Armenian. He is also the grandson of the famous footballer Alexander Kovalenko, who became a USSR champion in 1973 with Yerevan’s Ararat.
Earlier, Kovalenko had already received an invitation to join the Armenian national team, but at that time he chose to play for Russia, making one friendly appearance against Kyrgyzstan.
