Wednesday in the Champions League delivered a true kaleidoscope of emotions. Matchday 7 of the league phase — the penultimate round — had a major impact on the race for the top 8 and direct qualification to the playoffs. Giants proved their class, underdogs fought back, and the intrigue ahead of Matchday 8 only intensified.

Wednesday results, January 21

Slavia Prague – Barcelona 2:4
Barcelona were on the verge of a shock but eventually broke the hosts’ resistance. Trailing during the match, the Catalans turned the game around thanks to a brace from Fermín López and decisive second-half strikes. Robert Lewandowski scored his 114th European goal, while Dani Olmo’s appearance proved crucial.

Marseille – Liverpool 0:3
Liverpool claimed a confident away win and strengthened their push for the top 8. A Dominik Szoboszlai free kick, an own goal and a Cody Gakpo penalty sealed the result.

Newcastle – PSV 3:0
Newcastle United continue to rely on home form. The English side left PSV Eindhoven no chance, recording a third consecutive clean-sheet win at St James’ Park.

Qarabag – Eintracht Frankfurt 3:2
One of the most dramatic matches of the round. Qarabag snatched victory with the final kick of the game, as defender Bahlul Mustafazade scored in stoppage time to complete a stunning comeback.

Bayern Munich – Union Saint-Gilloise 2:0
Bayern recorded their 250th Champions League victory. Harry Kane scored twice in three minutes despite a red card and a missed penalty, while the Belgian side failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage.

Juventus – Benfica 2:0
Juventus extended their winning streak. Two second-half goals and a missed Benfica penalty ended the visitors’ hopes in Turin.

Atalanta – Athletic Bilbao 2:3
Atalanta controlled the match before the break, but Athletic produced a powerful 16-minute spell after halftime to turn the game around, dealing a serious blow to the Italians’ qualification hopes.

Galatasaray – Atletico Madrid 1:1
A draw that left questions for both teams. Galatasaray were rescued by an own goal, while Atletico missed the chance to take all three points from Istanbul.

Chelsea – Pafos 1:0
A narrow but vital win for Chelsea. Moisés Caicedo’s late goal broke the resistance of a well-organized Pafos side.

After seven rounds of the UEFA Champions League league stage, Arsenal remains top of the table with 21 points and a guaranteed spot in the Round of 16. Bayern Munich (18 points) is second, also virtually guaranteed a direct spot in the playoffs.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, Tottenham, PSG, Newcastle United, and Chelsea are currently in the Round of 16 (top 8) spot. The gap between the teams in 6th to 13th place is just one point, making the final stage extremely tense.

Six clubs with 13 points—Barcelona, Sporting, Manchester City, Atlético Madrid, and Atalanta—remain in the top 8 or risk ending up in the playoffs.

The playoff zone (places 9–24) is even more crowded. Inter and Juventus, with 12 points, are relatively comfortable and still have a chance of reaching the top eight, while Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray, and Qarabag are forced to compete in the final round of matches.

Below 25th place, the situation is critical: Napoli, PSV, Athletic Bilbao, and Olympiacos have minimal reserves and risk ending their European season already at the league stage.

Therefore, Matchday 8 of the Champions League will be decisive: the battle for direct places in the round of 16, places in the playoffs, and even a spot in the top 24 will continue until the final whistle. The league stage is reaching its climax, where every goal and every point is crucial.
