Today, September 19, at the 2025 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships, three Armenian athletes will take the spotlight — Hrachya Poghosyan (60 kg), Gor Khachatryan (72 kg), and Artur Aleksanyan (97 kg).
Gor Khachatryan, a 19-year-old debutant, will have his first-ever World Championship bout. In the 1/16 finals, he will face Luis Barrios from Honduras.
Hrachya Poghosyan, a 26-year-old wrestler with solid international experience, will open his campaign in the 60 kg weight class against Vladislav Kuzko from Ukraine.
Artur Aleksanyan, the 33-year-old legend of Armenian wrestling and Olympic champion, is aiming for his fifth world gold. He will begin from the 1/8 finals, where he awaits the winner of Abdul Kadir Cebi (Turkey) vs. Zegang Wang (China). In the semifinals, Aleksanyan may clash with Russia’s Artur Sargsyan, while in the final his likely rivals could be Cuba’s Gabriel Rosillo or Iran’s Olympic champion Mohammad Hadi Saravi.
Thus, on the second day of the championship, we will witness three generations of Armenian wrestlers — a young talent, a rising leader, and a living legend.
Later in the evening, another Armenian, Malkhas Amoyan (77 kg), will fight for gold in the final against Japan’s Nao Kusaki.
