Three Armenian Grandmasters Advance to the Third Round of the 2025 FIDE World Cup

Three Armenian chess players — Shant Sargsyan, Robert Hovhannisyan, and Gabriel Sargissian — have confidently advanced to the second round and secured their place in the third stage of the 2025 FIDE Chess World Cup, continuing their fight for the prestigious trophy.
In the upcoming round, Shant Sargsyan will face Turkey’s Mustafa Yilmaz. Robert Hovhannisyan is set for a challenging match against Indian grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who in recent years has been considered one of the brightest young talents in world chess. Gabriel Sargissian will compete against another Indian player — Diptayan Ghosh.
Armenian chess players competing under the U.S. flag have also advanced to the third stage: Levon Aronian and Sam Sevian. Aronian will play against the UAE’s Salem Saleh, while Sevian is set to face grandmaster Evgeny Najer, representing FIDE.
Thus, Armenian chess players continue to maintain a confident presence on the world stage, demonstrating consistency, experience, and a high level of skill. Ahead lie difficult games and intense battles for advancement to the next round.
