Sunderland unexpectedly ended their FA Cup campaign after losing 0–1 to League One outsiders Port Vale in the Round of 16.
The only goal of the match came in the 28th minute, when Wen Waine found the net. The hosts made the most of their chance and managed to hold on to their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Sunderland, who compete in the English Premier League, controlled much of the game but were unable to break down the opposition’s defense. The condition of the pitch also complicated matters for the visitors — the grass surface at Port Vale’s stadium was in poor condition, making combination play difficult.
It is worth noting that 18-year-old Armenia national team forward Finn Geragusian was included in Sunderland’s squad for the first time. However, the course of the match did not allow the coaching staff to bring the young striker onto the field, and he spent the game on the bench.
As a result, Port Vale produced one of the biggest upsets of the current FA Cup campaign by eliminating a Premier League side.
