The first legs of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals brought convincing victories for French side Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish club Atlético Madrid, both making strong bids to reach the semifinals.
PSG — Liverpool 2:0
The Parisians took revenge on Liverpool FC for last year’s defeat and confidently won the first leg at home.
The score was opened as early as the 11th minute: young midfielder Désiré Doué struck from outside the box, and the ball deflected over goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Despite the hosts’ dominance, the visiting goalkeeper made several crucial saves.
In the second half, PSG doubled their lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who finished a one-on-one chance after a precise through pass. The Parisians continued to press but failed to score a third goal — one attempt hit the post.
Now the French club heads to the return leg at Anfield with a comfortable advantage.
Barcelona — Atlético 0:2
In another match, FC Barcelona lost at home to Atlético Madrid, putting themselves in a difficult position ahead of the second leg.
The key moment came at the end of the first half: defender Pau Cubarsí received a straight red card, leaving the hosts with ten men. Just a minute later, Julián Álvarez brilliantly converted a free kick into the top corner.
After the break, the Catalans tried to respond, and Marcus Rashford had several good chances but failed to convert. Atlético remained composed and doubled their lead in the 70th minute through Alexander Sørloth, who finished a cross from the flank.
