19-year-old Armenian wrestler Arman Harutyunyan (57 kg) won a bronze medal at the U23 European Freestyle Wrestling Championships, currently taking place in Zrenjanin, Serbia.
In the bronze medal bout, Harutyunyan secured a confident early victory over Belarusian wrestler Artyom Pavlyuchenko, winning 10–0.
The tournament started with a qualification loss for the Armenian wrestler against Russia’s Ayandai Ondar with a score of 5–7. However, Ondar advanced to the final, which allowed Harutyunyan to continue the competition through the repechage rounds.
In the repechage matches, the Armenian athlete first defeated Ukraine’s Mykola Bratov convincingly, 16–5, and then dominated Belarus’ Pavlyuchenko 10–0 in the bronze medal match.
This tournament marked Harutyunyan’s first appearance at the U23 level. Previously, he won silver at the U17 European Championships and bronze at the U17 World Championships.
The medal became the first for the Armenian national team at the U23 European Championships in Zrenjanin. However, the tournament is not yet over for the Armenian team: two more bronze medal bouts, two repechage rounds, and a final featuring Levik Mikaelyan are still ahead.
